Liberation Struggles

Culture as a tool of liberation; the role of FESTAC and cultural events before it (mainly Algiers in 1969) to legitimise liberation movements across the continent, principally from the so-called Frontline States of southern Africa and former Portuguese colonies.

What role did the FESTAC 77 play in legitimising “liberation movements” such as the ANC, SWAPO and many other who officially participated in the festival?

How did the Nigerian government use FESTAC 77 to assert its championing of the liberation struggle in the frontline states (it is worth noting that FESTAC 77 happens a few months after the Soweto uprisings and shortly after the independence of former Portuguese colonies)?

How did FESTAC 77 affect the cultural policies of the participating groups?
