FESTAC’77 had to overcome conflicting ideological and political differences – not least of which was the role of the Nigerian military government in the event.
 


 

Cultural emissaries

As such FESTAC’ 77 employed a vigorous diplomatic offensive to the black world – enlisting key Nigerian artists and cultural practitioners who were dispatched as cultural emissaries.

These included Wole Soyinka, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Carlos Moore and Cyprian Ekwensi, amongst many others.
